Overview
Some emulators require firmware or BIOS files extracted from original hardware to function correctly or improve compatibility.
In Xbox Developer Mode, Standalone Emulators (like XBSX2 or Flycast) allow you to specify your own BIOS directories—typically on an external USB drive. RetroArch cores, however, strictly require BIOS files to be placed in its designated system folder.
Below is a comprehensive checklist of BIOS requirements, exact filenames, and standard directory paths for the emulators featured on Emulation Revival.
PlayStation 2 (XBSX2 & PCSX2 Standards)
XBSX2 is a UWP port of PCSX2. Because it shares the exact same backend logic, it adheres strictly to PCSX2’s official BIOS documentation.
The PCSX2/XBSX2 BIOS Files
To successfully boot and play games, only the main BIOS file is strictly required.
Required File:
SCPH-XXXXX.bin(The primary BIOS file) (Note: ReplaceXXXXXwith your console’s model number, such as70012for US,70004for PAL, or70000for Japan).
Alternative Dumper Filenames: Depending on the specific homebrew tool you use to dump your PS2 console, the extraction software may automatically name the BIOS file based on its internal firmware version and date, rather than the console model. These are perfectly valid and will look like this:

Optional / Legacy Files: If you perform a full hardware dump of your PS2, you may get the following extra files. While XBSX2 can read them, they are not strictly required for game compatibility. They mainly preserve memory card encryption, saved system settings, and DVD player functionality:

Directory Placement:
Unlike RetroArch, XBSX2 is a standalone UWP emulator. You must create a folder on your USB drive (e.g., USB:\XBSX2\BIOS) and place your BIOS files there.
- Open XBSX2.
- Navigate to Settings > BIOS Settings.
- Under BIOS Directory, select Add Search Directory and navigate to your folder, then select “Use this Directory”.
PS3 Extracted BIOS (via RPCS3)
Instead of dumping a physical PS2, you can use BIOS files extracted from official PlayStation 3 firmware. These files can be easily claimed using the Firmware BIOS Claim Tool once you have installed the official PS3 firmware file (PS3UPDAT.PUP) via the RPCS3 emulator.
The extracted PS2 BIOS files supported by XBSX2 are:

(Note: The extraction process will also generate a ps3_ps1_bios.bin file, which you can use for PlayStation 1 emulation in RetroArch.)
RetroArch (Multi-System)
RetroArch emulates dozens of consoles via “Cores,” many of which require their own BIOS files.
Directory Placement: All BIOS files for RetroArch must be placed directly into its main system folder (unless the core explicitly requires a subfolder):

Flycast requires Dreamcast firmware files if you have “HLE BIOS” disabled in the settings, or to improve compatibility with certain games. Arcade platforms require them strictly.

Directory Placement:
For the Standalone Flycast app, easily point Flycast to your USB drive by going into the emulator’s Settings > General and changing the Data/BIOS directory to a folder on your USB (e.g., USB:\Flycast\data\).
BIOS Troubleshooting & Validation
If your emulator reports a missing BIOS, check the following:
- Exact Filenames: Verify case-sensitivity against the lists above (e.g.,
dc_boot.bin, notDC_BOOT.BIN). Xbox Dev Mode can silently fail if the casing is incorrect. - Correct USB Permissions: This is the #1 cause of BIOS failure on Xbox Dev Mode. You must ensure your external USB drive is formatted to NTFS and has the “ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES” security permission set to “Full Control” via a Windows PC. If this is missing, the Xbox will silently block the emulator from reading your files.
- Double Check Directories: Ensure you assigned the correct directories within standalone emulator settings, and didn’t bury RetroArch files in unnecessary subfolders.
